TMJ Treatment in Frisco

Have you ever woken up with a sore jaw or heard a clicking or popping sound when you opened your mouth?

If yes, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that between 5% and 12% of the general adult population have some type of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder or TMD, which can significantly impact one’s quality of life. These disorders can cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles responsible for controlling jaw movement.

The TMJ connects the jawbone to the skull and functions like a sliding hinge. When this joint isn’t working properly, it can lead to a host of symptoms. Some of which people commonly recognize, and some that people don’t. In addition to clicking or popping sounds, the more common symptoms include jaw pain, headaches, earaches, and difficulty chewing. The less commonly recognized symptoms of TMD are persistent brain fog, difficulty focusing for extended periods, pressure or sloshing in the ears, a feeling of being slightly off balance, tightness around the eyes and ears, general irritability, tinnitus, and vertigo.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Many people don’t realize that the vertebrae in the upper neck and the base of the skull play a crucial role in jaw function. The nerves in these areas control the jaw, and when there is pressure on these nerve pathways, it can lead to TMJ disorders.

Our chiropractors can use precise upper cervical adjustments to relieve pressure on these nerves, allowing the cranial nerves that feed the jaw to function more appropriately. This chiropractic approach helps reset the brain centers and nerve pathways, relieving TMJ symptoms.

Gentle Adjustments and Advanced Techniques

We use a gentle Activator adjustment for patients experiencing jaw misalignment or deviation, such as a right deviation where the jaw may click or the bite feels off. This handheld tool delivers controlled impulses to the TMJ, helping to reposition the jaw joint back into place. Most patients experience immediate relief from clicking and discomfort after receiving this adjustment.

In addition to adjustments, we offer the Matrix, an electrical nerve block that targets tight jaw muscles, particularly the masseter. This technique helps to release muscle spasms, decrease pain, and block discomfort. Manual muscle stripping techniques also release tension in the jaw muscles, providing further relief.

Long-Term Management and Prevention

While some patients do experience quick relief, others may require ongoing care. TMJ disorders can be influenced by stress, muscle tension, and even hormonal imbalances. Chronic clenching, for example, can lead to gum recession and other dental issues. We recommend stabilizing the condition with regular adjustments and follow-up care for chronic cases.

Depending on the severity, maintenance visits may be scheduled every two to four weeks to ensure long-term relief and prevent the condition from worsening.
